Day 4: N for Night
Begin with a couple of minutes of stillness and silence, to let go of the things on your mind and to become aware of God’s presence.
READ Psalm 4:8
When I lie down, I go to sleep in peace; you alone, O Lord, keep me perfectly safe.
Have you ever had the experience of being burgled at night while you were sleeping? I experienced this, one night when I was living overseas. My husband was away in the north of the country with work and my children and I were alone in our flat.
I woke at the sound of the mosquito door to my room opening and I expected the pitted patter of feet and one of my children appearing at my bedside. No child emerged and I felt compelled to go swiftly to see if all was well with them. On entering the sitting room I discovered the door to the verandah was opened and every drawer/cupboard door in the room was also open! I returned to my room for my glasses and a torch since having locked the verandah door I feared that maybe I had locked the intruders inside the flat!
All was well in my daughter’s room and she was asleep. I went to my son’s room and found the door opened. As I checked his room he woke up and understandably asked what was I doing?! I explained we had had intruders and I was checking that they were not in the flat. He leapt out of bed, grabbed the two large stones that secured the pages of his homework books from the breeze of the fan and came with me. We searched everywhere and thanks be to God found no one. He returned to bed and I went into the sitting room.
There the enormity of the situation hit me and the calm I had had while searching the flat departed. I tried to ring some close friends but not surprisingly at 3.0am they did not answer their phone!
I began to pray and as I did so the verse above came to mind in the King James Version, “ I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” (KJV) I thanked God that we were indeed safe, that he had protected us and prayed for peaceful sleep. I slept like a log til the alarm went!
Next morning we discovered that various items had been stolen, prescription glasses, all the calculators, a clock and the video player in which was a video of ‘Just William and the Burglars”!
Choose a word, phrase, or even the whole verse to silently ponder on. Turn it over and over in your mind and see what God will show you through it.
PRAY the Lord’s Prayer
Carry your chosen word/phrase/verse into the day with you and repeat it at intervals during the day.
Make a note of the insights you gained from this verse in your journal.
