The Hedgerow

Dear Corinne,

Shifting from shifts to a nine to five job sounds great! And with a regular lunch hour, you will indeed have time to stop and be still sometimes in the middle of the day. So, as we agreed, I will send you some short stillness exercises for you to try over the coming weeks.

While you could do these stillness exercises at your desk, I would encourage you to move to a different spot… maybe sit in one of the atriums in your office block, or weather permitting find a seat in the park, or in one of the garden squares nearby. Changing locations will enable you to let go of the morning and be less distracted by your work environment.

Once you have found a place to be still, take a moment or two to let go of the morning and the busy things on your mind. You may find it helpful to take a few deep breaths as you do this…breath in deeply and let it out slowly……and move into a place of peace and rest.

Look carefully at the Hedgerow photo below ………………………….
Notice the location, the weather, the time of day………………………
Notice as many details as you can………………………………………

As you look, ask God what he is wanting to highlight to you through this picture……………………………………………….
take your time…………………………………….

Look at the purple flowers (they are called Tufted Vetch!) and the blackberries…………………………………….
Think about the Summer and what you have enjoyed about it, and what you have found challenging…………………………………….
Think about the season of Autumn and how you feel about it ………………
What is God saying to you?……………………………….

Now read the verses below…………..
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his.
He changes times and seasons;
He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”
Daniel 2:20-21 (NIV)

Finally, spend a few moments in praise and thanksgiving for what you have received from God, during your time of reflection with this picture.

Let me know how you get on!

with love
