Written Reflections

Advent

The church year starts in November, with the season of Advent. It is a time of preparation as we wait for the King to come: remembering the historic anticipation of the birth of Jesus, and also acknowledging that the day will come when Jesus once again returns to earth.

Advent Advent – D

D is for desire

‘We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts’.

The above quote comes from the general confession, which is found in the service of Morning Prayer, in the earlier versions of the Church of England’s Book of Common Prayer.

Let us consider now what the desires of our own hearts are at this time?  How do they line up with God’s word and will for our lives?

Read the verses below from Psalm 37 three times and choose a word, phrase, or sentence to meditate on for a few minutes.

Trust in the Lord and do good: dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
Trust in him and he will do this.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;

(Psalm 37:3-5 & 7a)
