D for Drown (If you would prefer an audio version of this meditation you will find one here!)
Matthew 8:23-27 (The Message)
Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.
The disciples were amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked. “Even the winds and waves obey him!”
Imagine that you are with the disciples and Jesus in the boat. Take time to survey the scene.
What is the boat like? What is the weather like? What are the disciples discussing together?
Where is Jesus? Whereabouts in the boat are you?
Suddenly the weather begins to change.
The mood of the disciples changes. What are they saying, doing, feeling? How do you feel? What do you do?
The waves break over the boat.
Which disciple wakes Jesus?
Watch as Jesus stands and rebukes the wind and raging waters – they subside at a his command.
How do you feel as Jesus says, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!”
Take a moment to consider your life at the moment. Is it stormy or calm?
How do you respond to Jesus’ comment about faith?
As the disciples look at each other and Jesus in fear and amazement, Jesus looks at you.
What do you want to say to him? What does he say to you?
Spend time listening to him as the boat sails calmly on and reaches the shore.
You all disembark. Watch as Jesus and the disciples walk along the shore.
