As the year draws to a close, it is a good time to reflect back over the past year and to look forwards to the New Year. “The Lord says, I will teach you the way you should go; I will instruct and advise you.” (Psalm 32:8 GNT) Before you complete your reflection on the tree, by considering what promotes its growth and well-being, take a few moments to reflect back over the past year and to recall the times that the Lord did indeed show you the way to go during it.
- How did he do this for you?
- Did you hear his voice and discern his will swiftly or did his guidance come more slowly over time?
- What did you learn from this process?
- How did it encourage you in your faith?
Now, in order for a tree to grow, it needs certain vital elements such as water and sun. If you have not already done so, draw a watering can at the bottom of the tree, on the left. Take a few moments to consider what are the life-giving and nourishing elements that you need for your life, in order to grow and mature and to maintain good health. Ponder on these, and ask the Lord, “What do I do to feed the tree with good things?” When you have done so, then ask, “Lord what else would you like me to do, in order to strengthen my growth?” Write down the key words/themes for you on or around the watering can. Then reflect on:
- What type of season is your tree currently going through?
- What are the signs and symptoms of this season and
- What are God’s promises for it?
The Tree of Life
“What delight comes to those
Who follow God’s ways!
They will be standing firm
Like a flourishing tree planted by God’s design,
Deeply rooted by the brooks of bliss;
Bearing fruit in every season of their lives.
They are never dry, never fainting,
Ever blessed ever plentiful.”
Psalm 1: 1a, & 3 The Passion Translation
God’s hand is over every part of your tree, commend it to him and pray for his blessing and protection to cover it, both now and throughout the coming year.
There is an audio meditation version of this series. It is called The Tree of Your Life
